Bournemouth, 17th
August 2003 A
good squad and hopes were high for a trip to the seaside to face
an in form Bournemouth side full of young talent and with an eye
on the title, after a Milton Keynes forfeit the previous week gave
hope to the chasing pack.
With the Mav's having
already beaten the Shark's this year on home teritory the Sharks were
out for revenge and this was to be their day.
It was evident from the
off that this was to be a difficult day on the diamond.
Bournemouth Sharks unveiled their new 'wonderkid'........................an
ex Dutch Youth International and he showed pure class striking
out an unbelieveable 15 Mavericks batters !!
With a fast ball close
to 75 mph, a good curve to boot and some curious calls from behind
the plate, the odds were stacked against us and we stood
little chance of getting on the scoresheet. But as he tired
through five innings and 12-1 down, the Mavericks started to get going
offensively as Walk's got things going . The
Dutch ace was starting to tire and this was the start of a seven
run rally unanswered by the Sharks. Notables include first
Mavericks hit by Heather Armstead against her former team (inside
information one thinks !!!)and hits for Pete Hammer (an unbelieveable
triple.....how do those legs make it ????) Juilius Miller and
Ben Mullard. 12-8 down and the Mav's starting to believe, it
proved to be a false dawn as the Sharks edged further ahead with
six unanswered runs in the bottom of the seventh to close out a
good afternoon of baseball.
Good luck to the Sharks
but it had us all wondering that had it not been for the Dutch
ace it could have been a very different story.
Never mind, next game v
the Richmond Knights and as last home game of the season the Mavericks
will be looking to close out a respectable season.
