Windsor Royals 35
Guildford Mavericks 15

Guildford, August 10th, 2003. The rumours that Guildford are looking for a decent fleet footed cornerback and a hard hitting strong safety in order to bolster their punch drunk secondary, aren't quite true, but for the third week running, the Mavericks gave up a football score, as they were downed by the Windsor Royals.

That said, nothing should be taken away from the Royals batters, as without doubt, this was the best hitting team Guildford have faced this season. In fact Pete Hammer on the mound pitched a pretty decent game, but they just had quick bats that were able to turn on his fastballs, a couple of which were deposited over the left field fence by M.Minkkinen and Jon Marsh in the second inning. In fact Windsor seemed to find it harder to connect off both the Mavericks relievers later in the game, probably down to the fact the pitchers weren't as quick and had more trouble finding the strike zone.

Fortunately for Guildford the Windsor pitching didn't match their hitting, and although their defense was good, they did make some mistakes, which although not enough to allow the Mavericks to make the game close, did at least allow them to stay competitive.

Windsor scored 5 times on a 2 out rally in the first, and then 4 more in the second on the solo home run by Minkkinen and the 3 run shot from Marsh. The Mavericks only run in this time came from Julius Miller, who had reached base after being hit by a pitch.

On a scorchingly hot day (maybe not quite 100F, but getting close), the Royals broke it open for good in the 4th inning, scoring 9 times, as it was just proving impossible for the Mavericks to plug all the gaps the field, as Windsor batters put the ball over and in front of the outfielders, as well as down the lines.

Guildford did bring it back to 20-11 by the end of the 4th, as the Windsor starter struggled for a bit of control, loading up the bases, which were cleared on a 3-run from triple from Mike Burdett and added to by Roger Marsden's RBI single. Again in the 5th, the Mavericks scored 4 more times, this time keyed by Pete Hammers triple.

As the game wore on, and with the outcome assured, both sides made changes on the mound and in the field, in order to put some fresh (if not cooler) faces in the game. On the Mavericks side, mention must go to Julius Miller who was 2 for 3 on the day with a couple of doubles, Ben Mullard who came on in relief again, and this time did not give up a single earned run, and Roger Marsden who had an assured display behind the plate and in left field (although may have cricked his neck watching some of those home runs disappear over him), as well as contributing with his hitting.

Although it is doubtful that Guildford could improve their hitting to the level exhibited by Windsor, it is possible to improve on the defensive side of things, and this is one key area that will be worked on in the off season. Now if only if we could find that blitzing outside linebacker.........
