Guildford Mavericks 3
Brighton Buccaneers 44

Brighton, May 29th 2005.  Playing at Brighton's excellent facilities is always a treat & usually brings out the best in the Mavericks. However on this Sunday afternoon the latter did not materialise.

With Untimely injuries and key absences meant  Coach, Rob Wheeler's resources were somewhat stretched. The starting line-up was therefore a patchwork of veterans & inexperience. With a limited bench to call upon there was little room for tactical management.

From the beginning , the lack of punch from the Mavericks hitters failed to give Starting Pitcher Ally Carr breathing space and  with Brighton's Offence doing the exact opposite it was always going to be an uphill struggle for the plucky Mav's. With most most of the balls being hit, bypassing the Mavericks infielders, there was little they could do prevent the big inning from carrying on. Still it gave Rookies like Sam

Sam Jones catches an outfield fly ball

Jones plenty to do in the outfield.

By the time reliever Tom Sheridan entered the fray the game was already lost and it was just a case of damage limitation.

Also forgettable were some rudimentary base running mistakes by Mavericks and a certain Veteran player turning a base hit into an out at 1st.

The positives came great individual performance from Mav's Catcher Heather Armstead, who..Thanks to a fellow teamate sustained a nasty bump on the head during warm-ups. Solid behind the plate & with the bat, Hevra collided with her opposite number at home plate in a heroic slide to score one of our few runs. Armsteads performance also drew praise from Brighton Coach Kevin Gogan.

In conclusion then, a steep learning curve for this new look Mavericks Team. But played always with great spirit ,heads never dropping throughout . In the return fixture look for a more steelier affair from Rob Wheelers Mavericks.

With new additions to the line-up and a recent boost to our finances, Baseball in Guildford is on the right path.

Croydon, here we come
