Guildford Mavericks 4 |

Burgess Hill,
May 8th, 2005.
Red Hat starter - Davison
Guildford travelled down to
Burgess
Hill for their first visit in 8 years with only two survivors
from the no-hitter pitched that day by Dave Wallace, and almost
found themselves on the end of one themselves. Red Hats starter
Gary Davison gave up just a 4th inning hit to Jamie Barnett, and
then back to back hits from Jamie Barnett and Mike Burdett in
the 6th,
whilst striking out 16.
That
said, the Mavericks were able to keep the game close, as Owen
Hazelby after a slightly shaky start, found his rhythmn, and
restricted the Red Hats to 8 runs through 4 innings, retiring
them in order in the 4th.
The
Mavericks were retired in order in the first, after Sam Jones,
making his first Maverick start, in LF, drew a lead-off walk,
and Burgess Hill immediately jumped out in front. Keyed by hits
from Chris Nisbet and Gary Davison, the Red Hats scored 4 times
in the first, and
then 4 more in the second. A scoreless third where each side
only managed to put one runner on base, was followed by the
Mavericks breaking the no hitter, as Jamie Barnett singled to
CF, and came round to score on a wild pitch. Owen was again able
to shut the Red Hats down in the fourth, notable for a good
catch on the run by Sam Jones, but the Mavericks were unable to
put up any more runs on the scoreboard in the 5th.
Duncan Phillippo took to the mound in relief of Owen in the 5th,
and with his extra pace, had the Burgess Hill batters struggling
to
keep up. Unfortunately he was let down by hisDave Jones slides into second
defense, as a couple of
fielding errors, and some mental mistakes, prevented him
from getting single out, and in the process loading the bases,
and giving up 5 runs, before departing for Ally Carr. Ally was
similarly unable to stem the tide, as he too struggled for
accuracy, and with Burgess Hill almost batting round twice, the
game was effectively over, with a 10 run inning The Mavericks
were finally able to add some more runs to their total in the
6th and 7th innings, with Jamie Barnett and Mike Burdett driving
in runs off Davison the Red Hats starter, before he was replaced
in the 7th by Fuller, who was met RBI double from Ally Carr,
after a lead off walk to Duncan Phillippo.
Burgess Hill
had replied with 3 more runs of their own in the bottom of the
6th, and as Jamie grounded out to end the game, the Red Hats had
delivered the Mavericks 4th defeat in a row to start the season.
On the strength of the
For the Mavericks, Owen had another good game on the mound, once he settled down, and Jamie continued to lead his charge to the MVP award, being the only batter that really looked comfortable against Davison. Sam Jones also had a good debut, and certainly provides defensive options in the Mavericks outfield Next week, the Mavericks travel down to Southampton, hoping the the season series with the Mustangs.
