The Cheddar Rockies visited
Guildford, with one of the more unusual current streaks in the
division - that of having lost both home games, whilst winning
all 3 of their games on the road. Guildford on the other hand
were still winless, and were hoping to claim their first scalp
of the season. A debut was given in RF to Tom Sheridan, and
Marty Poulter was starting on the mound for the Mavericks.

The Rockies started well,
scoring 3 times in the top of the first on 3 walks and a base
hit,
but the
Mavericks came right back to take a 5-3 lead, on 5 walks, and 3
hits, including a double from
SS Owen Hazelby that drove in both Steve Hollindgale
and
Tom Sheridan. This lead was only to last into the top of the
second, as the Rockies came right back with 4 two-out runs of
their own, to take a 7-5 lead, after a lead-off ground out, and
a sharp line drive that was well taken by Owen at short.
The see-saw start to the game
carried on into the bottom of the second, as the Mavericks tied
it up at 7-
7, as Rob Shaw singled and Tom
Sheridan walked to lead off the inning, and came round to score
on
The Mavericks came up short in
the 3rd, although Rob Wheeler trying to get things going for the
Mavericks, was narrowly thrown out at 3rd, having already stolen
second. Unforutnately this was followed by both Paul L'allier
and Steve Hollingdale
reaching
base, but neither of them being able to score. Ally found his
rhythm in the bottom of the inning, striking out the side after
a lead off base hit from Walker had given them them a further
run. Tom
Sheridan then doubled to lead off the 4th, and scored on Mike
Burdett's RBI single. Ally helped himself, as he singled, stole
second, and came ronud to score on a wild pitch, as Paul stayed
alive long anough for 2 runs to score. A 17-10 Cheddar lead was
increased to double figures, as the Rockies scored 3 times in
the 5th, on
3 hits and a couple of walks,
although yet again ran themselves out of an inning, a CF-2B fly
ball double play ended the inning prematurely.
The Mavericks bats were
certainly hitting the ball, and Steve Hollingdale l
ead
off with a double, and was driven in by an Owen Hazleby RBI
single, although again they left more runners on the base,
although it has to be said, that the fly ball Ally Carr hit down
the left field line, was going all the way, if it had stayed
fair, and he must be considered unfortunate when less solid hits
from the Rockies bats, off his pitching, kept dropping in, or
staying fair.![]()
Down by 9 runs, Guildford were
down, but not out, although the 6th put paid to this, as the
Rockies extended their lead further with a 7 run inning, as Ally
began to tire. 5 walks, and at least one fortuitous infield hit,
bought Tom Sheridan into the came in relief of Ally. Tomn
started well, striking out Tucker, and although he gave up a
walk and a hit, bringing a couple of runs round to score, the
inning closed as
Julius
Miller made a stunning catch at 1B, as the base runner crossed
right through his field of view, as t he ball arrived. Julius
then helped himself to single in his first game of the season,
and scored on Steve Hollingdales, 3rd RBI of the game.
Cheddar were finally shut down
in the 7th, as a K, fly out - thrown out double play menat only
3 batters came up in the inning, but it still left the Mavericks
with the task of scoring 6 times to continue the game into the
8th. Unfortunately an Ally Carr RBI single, that drove in Owen
Hazleby, were the only runs that the Mavericks managed, and
Cheddar closed the game out, and their 4th consecutive road
vistory as Dave Jones grounded out to end the game.

Plenty of postives to take from
the game for the Mavericks. Better hitting than in recent weeks,
and some very solid outfield. Both Ally and Tom pitched
well on the mound, although it
was unfortunate to lose Marty to injury for what may be up to 6
weeks. It was also good to have yet another large turn out on
the bench, and no doubt this will continue next week, as the
Mavericks make their first visit to the premier diamond in the
country at Brighton, next weekend, in a basement battle.
Maverick MVP: Ally Carr
