Tonbridge Bobcats 17 |
On a slightly overcast and damp afternoon the Mavericks opened their season with a visit from the Bobcats. After pre game warm ups the teams took the field with the intention of getting their season of to a positive start. The opening few innings were close as the pitchers settled into their rhythm. Good hitting kept both the infield and the outfield on their toes and the scores were very close going into the middle of the game.
As the Mavericks were leading 9-6 the Bobcats brought in their relief pitcher and his command of the zone and a decent curve ball helped restrict the Mav’s to just four more runs. At the same time the Mavericks made a number of line up changes from their bench in an effort to close out the game. With things poised nicely for a tight finish the Bobcats exploded offensively in the 7th inning and scored 10 runs. This left Guildford trailing by 7 runs and that proved to be too great a margin to close in just two innings.
The game was competed in excellent spirits and it was a pleasure to see a lively and competitive game of baseball so early in the season. It was also great to see many new faces for the Mavericks. A special thanks goes to Brian Kendall, Nick Jolly and Mike Burdett for umpiring the game.
