The Mavericks Softball Page

When, Where, What.......

Of course, you may not currently play for the Mavericks, or even play baseball, but just want to play Softball. Either way, why not come down to Christ's College on a Tuesday evening and enjoy a game of slow pitch softball. As part of our midweek training schedule for the 2008 season, the Guildford Mavericks are going to introduce the game of Slow-Pitch softball, initially taking the place of every 3rd training session. Not only will this give the coaches a break from having to plan a schedule every 3rd week (and admit it, even the most committed of you, sometimes get bored with the same old routines), but it will also allow us to introduce a more social aspect of the game.

In the long term we would like these games of softball to be played on a more frequent basis, with the eventual aim for them to evolve into a local softball league. What we are not trying to do, is replace baseball, but simply to expand the club to cater for both of these sports. However, taking one step at a time, 2008 is going to be season where we just try and introduce the sport in this informal manner.

We anticipate that the initial games will be composed mainly from Mavericks players, friends, family and colleagues. But as we progress we aim to publicise this more, in an attempt to bring more people into the club. Of course, to begin with, we will use the baseball diamond, with the dimensions being modified to meet slow pitch softball rules (bases are 60 ft apart, and pitching is from 50 ft away).

The dates put aside for softball for this season are:

May 20th
June 10th
July 1st
July 13th - Emmit Borcik Memorial Game (Sunday, 1pm start)
July 22nd
Aug 12th

Games will be a 7pm start, and will be 7 innings or 90 minutes in duration (whichever comes first), unless the weather or light intervenes.

There will be coaching for anyone who is not familiar with the game beforehand, and all eqpt will be provided.

As with everything else Mavericks, please email jazz@guildfordmavericks.co.uk if you are interested in taking part. Email softball@guildfordmavericks.co.uk for more information, or if you would like to help in some other capacity.

....report from first game - Tuesday May 20th

You've tried batting….and found you can't get out of the way of that 40 mph off-speed pitch

You've tried stealing bases….but the catcher has enough time to run to second and tag you out

You've tried hitting a curveball by looking for that seem rotation……but have trouble enough just seeing the ball

You've tried pitching….but the only pitch you can perfect is the gravity ball

.....and You've tried getting into a pair baseball pants that look more suited to a cyclist in the Tour de France

but you still love baseball…..so what are you going to do?

How about playing some Softball. It's the same game, but with a few modifications, and best of all, you don't have to worry about any of the above!
